Buying more ugly food: an imperfect waste solution?

Every year, around 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted, enough to end world hunger many times over. One often-mooted solution to the problem is buying more so-called ugly food: perfectly edible produce that doesn’t meet supermarkets’ high aesthetic requirements. But critics say ugly food is seldom actually thrown away, and there are more effective ways to fight waste.
